Arrival in Bergen on Sunday (3rd day)
.
After
checking into our hotel, we made the most of the remaining couple of hours of
sunshine and walked into town.
Much of
Bergen is built up in the hills around so there are some steep climbs to get to
the streets above the town centre.
Our
walk took us past the “Lille Lundegardsvann” lake down through the
pedestrianised shopping centre to Bryggen which is famous for its colourful
harbourside houses.
We then walked
around the grounds of the Bergenhus Fortress which was completely destroyed by
an enemy ammunition ship during WWII and then climbed up the streets that
overlook Bergen where there were some lovely views of the harbour and town.
Day 4 in
Bergen
Another
lovely day so we took the Cable Car up Mount Floyen where there are very nice views over Bergen and the surrounding area.
It was quite icy on the paths but we managed to walk through the woods
to a small lake which was frozen over.
We then took the cable car back down to the town and walked around the Nordnes Peninsular and found the Hurtigruten
terminal where we must get to tomorrow afternoon. After lunch on a park bench we bought a 24 hour bus pass and made our way to
Troldhaugen to visit the Edvard Greig museum.
Here we were able to go in the house be had built for him and his wife
and the workshop where he composed much of his works. The gardens had wonderful views of the fjord
. The grave for him and his wife is high
up in the rocks with an engraved stone covering it. By now it had started to cloud over so we took
the tram to our last visit of the day to see a medieval Stave Church made
entirely from wood which was very impressive.
As we made our way back to the tram the clouds turned very black and we
had a heavy snowstorm. It didn't last long and the snow didn't settle so we went out later and bought a takeaway pizza for our evening meal and brought it back to the hotel.
